ASSIGNMENT 2 - Hopper - Rooms by the Sea

Chosen Painting for narrative

Decomposition of Painting:

The feeling of loneliness is expressed in the painting.

The door opens to the ocean

The open door is suggesting the occupant is waiting for someone

stark empty room shows emptiness

Sunlight through doorway indicates optimism for companions return

From this i have created the following narrative:

"A Fishermans wife is longing for her husbands return..."

Alright, so....
In a simplistic dot-point form here are my ideas/concepts behind the building...

- Views from all rooms so the fishermans wife will always be able to see if her husband is cresting the horizon
- The building is designed to give the impression of "leaning forward in anticipation" - it leans out over the headland and has a 'cap' on the front room reflecting a person 'peering' into the distance with their hand shielding over their eyes like a brim...
- The haphazardly placed support columns suggests the perturbed feelings of the lonely wife, concerned about her husband
- There is a waiting room (small room jutting out of the front), an empty room expressing loneliness which is open to the ocean, and the bedroom (upstairs) symbolising the relationship.
- The waiting room is small and cosy. It is furnished with couches/chairs/daybed etc... and gives the feeling of comfort.
Beyond this room is the empty area which is open to the elements at the front, giving a clear, undisturbed view. The openness suggests the expectance of her husband
The bedroom upstairs has a vertical window beside the bedhead so the wife can see out to the horizon as well as looking through the house. When standing, the wife can see through the horizontal window above the roof of the lower level, which allows her to see the horizon line.
- The building is isolated on a lonely headland to add to all the above...
